Prairie Avenue Lofts – 221 E. Cullerton (138 Units)
Prairie Avenue Lofts is a slightly atypical loft conversion due to its combination of rehabbed units and new construction penthouses. The development consists of 108 renovated lofts on the first eight stories, plus 30 penthouses on three more floors added to the existing stone and brick structure. The project is a reinvention of the old Atwell Printing Company building, originally built in the 1920s.
Prairie Avenue Lofts offer several different floor plans ranging from 900 sq. ft. to 1,500 sq. ft., with one to three bedrooms. The lofts have ceilings heights of up to 12-feet with exposed spiral ductwork and pipes. True to loft form, the units were designed with open layouts that are subdivided by partial walls. There are hardwood floors in the main living areas and halls. Bedrooms generally have carpeting and bathrooms are tiled. The baths have 5 ft. soaking tubs and separate shower stalls. Each unit has its own laundry and is conveniently pre-wired for cable, telephone and Internet.
Kitchen finishes vary per plan, but many units have the ever-popular stainless steel appliance and granite counter package. Full walls of windows in the living rooms bring in lots of light and some provide access to private balconies through sliding glass doors. A number of units feature fireplaces, built-ins and exposed brick accents.
In addition to gated outdoor parking spaces, there is secured garage parking on levels one and two of the Prairie Avenue Lofts building. And, it’s easy for residents to get in a workout because there is an on-site fitness center with exercise and weight machines, yoga balls and mats, punching bag and other workout options.
A wealth of cultural institutions and popular sites are within walking distance of the lofts, including the lakefront, which is only a couple blocks east. The lofts are located in Chicago’s historic Prairie Avenue District, home to the Clark house, the oldest house in the city, and the Glessner House, a National Historic Landmark and the only remaining Chicago mansion built by famous architect Henry Hobson Richardson.
