Ohio West Lofts – 2401 W. Ohio (21 Units)
The Ohio West Lofts are true timber lofts located on the far western edge of Chicago’s hip Ukrainian Village community. The popularity of this neighborhood has exploded in recent years, making its properties a hot commodity for Chicago-area home buyers. In 1992, the development firm of Frankel & Giles converted the three-story brick building at 2401 W. Ohio into a mixed-use space with commercial property and 21 hard-loft units.
The original structure is from 1909. Its bare industrial exterior is the perfect shell for the ultra-cool live/work spaces within. Units are decked with all the crucial loft attributes: exposed brick surfaces, big multi-pane warehouse windows, lofty timber ceilings, suspended overhead ductwork, and large open floor plans. Ohio West Lofts offer one- and two-bedroom layouts, some with lofted upper level square footage. For the most part, the lofts have fashionable interior appointments throughout, some with “green” additions. The kitchens feature stainless steel appliances, trendy cabinet choices, granite and concrete counters, and island options. Refinished hardwood floors are standard in the Ohio West Lofts, as are the oversized windows.
A fourth-level penthouse was added to the three-story building and there is also access to the roof. Residents of Ohio West Lofts share the sizeable rooftop sundeck, which boasts full 360-degree views and bbq grills. A fitness center is on-hand for resident use and there’s an indoor parking garage as well. The ground-level storefront units are an excellent property for artists’ studios or other live-in businesses.
Ohio West Lofts is a little off the beaten path for neighborhood hangouts, but definitely not out of reach. The action on Chicago Avenue begins just four blocks north of Ohio Street. There are restaurants, pizzerias, delicatessens, cafés, shops and bars. Sports fields, recreation activities and an outdoor swimming pool are an easy walk to Smith Park, which is only a block-and-a-half away. And the Western Avenue Metra station is two blocks south.
